‘Ulu, more commonly known as Breadfruit is the central motif in our pattern for Kaiaulu, which translates to ‘community, or village’. As a canoe crop, ‘ulu holds significant cultural meaning for Hawaiians because of all that the plant provided for : a staple food, important source of medicine, wood for building, and fiber for kapa making. It is a plant around which so much of the community gathers and connects. Who is most like the ‘ulu plant in your community?
